SPAL Brushless Fans - Designed for Motorsport

06 February 2025

MIA Member SPAL Automotive UK has shared the following news article.

SPAL Automotive UK has been a long-time member of the MIA benefiting from the Association’s technology showcases and networking opportunities to put its range of world beating, high-performance brushless drive fans and blowers in front of the right people.

Working alongside vehicle engineers and developers SPAL has been able understand the specific demands of the sector to refine its thermal management products used in motorsport applications.

For pro-drifter Stuart Egdell including brushless fans in his cooling set up was nothing short of game changing.  The particular conditions of this style of racing whereby ambient temperatures are high and the sideways movement of the vehicle means less air is passing over the engine, it is almost an occupational hazard that overheating may occur and inhibit performance on the track.

Looking to go to the next level, Stuart instantly recognised the benefits of brushless when competing in the French Drift Championship where he found himself to be one of the few cars not experiencing difficulty; not just because of the super-efficient cooling but the fact that that brushless fans can be set up through the Power Distribution Module (PDM).

They can also be linked to the Engine Control Unit (ECU), a device that manages various aspects of engine operation, including fuel injection, ignition timing, emissions control and even power output regulation.

When the ECU senses that the engine is getting too hot, it will limit the power the engine can produce to prevent it from overheating.

In the event of a sudden temperature spike, even in engines capable of producing 700 horsepower under normal conditions, the ECU may reduce power output by 30-40% to ensure the safety of the vehicle.

This ability for SPAL brushless fans to facilitate the precise management of cooling so that it kicks in only when needed while protecting the engine, is what really makes a difference out on the racetrack.
