Motorsport UK invites MIA members to review blueprints and establish indicative UK Cross Car costs
15 January 2025
Motorsport UK would like to extend the opportunity to MIA members to participate in an exercise to review the blueprints and establish indicative UK Cross Car costs that will inform the strategic direction for continued Cross Car adoption. What’s in it for MIA Members? - A chance to get in on the ground floor with an opportunity to shape the integration of Low Cost Cross Car into existing and new disciplines (and generate business as a result of increased participation)…
- Potential to be registered as a Motorsport UK Cross Car supplier (homologated / registered equipment)…
- Potential to tap into global market as an established supplier (Motorsport UK Advocate on behalf of UK suppliers to other ASNs)…
Summary: Cross Car is an emerging category of vehicles, defined by FIA Appendix J Article 279b. Cross Cars are rear engine 4-wheeled single-seater vehicles, solely designed for races on off-road circuits, with a multitubular space frame chassis which must have a safety cage as an integral part of the chassis. Cross Car has been slowly adopted in the UK, primarily in the Rally Cross discipline, with trials also run in Sprint and Hillclimb and Single Venue Stage Rallies: The Motorsport UK Sporting Discipline Executive and Committees are developing strategic opportunities to further expand the adoption of Cross Car, including exploring multi-discipline formats (Rally Cross, Sprint, Hillclimb, Stage Rally, Cross Country). In parallel, the FIA have launched an Affordable Cross Car concept which aims to reduce cost of entry by providing a full suite of standardised technical drawings for use by ASNs (National Governing Bodies) to build low-cost, easily maintained cars for entry level and grassroots competition. The opportunity for smaller National Governing Bodies is to engage local engineering firms to produce most of the components required to build a Cross Car locally, increasing opportunities to promote participation in the sport without relying on imported vehicles and equipment. The published blueprints focus on two variants of Cross Car to compliment existing and future cars homologated to Appendix J Article 279B.
