The motorsport world converges on the UK every July, with this year’s British Grand Prix hosting a record 565,000 fans across the weekend, followed by a sell-out Goodwood Festival of Speed showcasing the great and the good of the sport.

A recent survey showed that less than half of the 26.2 million of Britons that see themselves as a motorsport fan are aware that they can get involved in the sport. While football pitches and tennis courts are booked by followers of the Men’s Football World Cup and Wimbledon Tennis during or after the event, it is equally as easy to find and fund a competitive motorsport activity.

National Motorsport Week aims to show that there is a motorsport for everyone, whether competing or volunteering. Many clubs are holding taster events this week and a new Motorsport UK guide shows that it is much easier to take part than you might think, with many accessible disciplines suited to all levels of experience.

There are 14 different motorsport disciplines, split into five groups and covering all budgets and abilities, many open to a wide range of ages. The guide takes you through every one of these, with easy-to-follow instructions on what’s needed and the costs involved – in many cases highly affordable.

Convergent Science is hosting the 2026 CONVERGE CFD Forum: Future Fuels and Emobility on September 8 at the Universitat Politècnica de València - Ciudad Politécnica de la Innovación (CPI). From the bustling community of competitors and volunteers to the fervour around the Formula 1 and the British Grand Prix, from 11 to 21 July 2024, National Motorsport Week will celebrate motorsport in all of its four-wheeled glory.

This summer’s campaign is designed to shine a light on one of country’s foremost sporting capabilities. It will celebrate motorsport, and all the opportunities that it offers, from volunteering to competing, through a series of events across the national network of 676 motor clubs from the Caithness Motor Club in Thurso to the Jersey Motorcycle and Light Car Club in Les Charrieres du Bouley in the Channel Islands.

The second aspect of celebrating motorsport and the opportunities that it provides, will be a national awareness campaign to provide beginners with information and insight on the multitude of ways to compete with very limited funding and even without a driving licence! 

With 13 categories of competition and multiple individual disciplines that are open to competitors from the age of six upwards, Motorsport UK is today launching a new website at https://motorsportweek.org/ to bring together all of the pathways available to inform and help new starters to give motorsport a go. 

Motorsport UK will continue to offer free membership and licensing for many grassroots categories of competition, including AutoSOLOs, Production Car Autotests and Trials.

Alongside immersion and information, National Motorsport Week also aims to inspire participation. The campaign starts in the run-up to the pinnacle events in the UK track racing calendar, Goodwood Festival of Speed and across the following ten days that concludes on race day for the Formula E London E-Prix, no less than 103 Motorsport UK-sanctioned events will take place. These range from entry-level karting events such as the British Indoor Karting Championships with qualification ongoing at TeamSport locations, to sports car racing with the British GT Championship at Snetterton to forest rallying with the Nicky Grist Stages in Builth Wells. Every event will be a muster point to inspire spectators to swap seats in the grandstands for a seat behind the wheel.

For those with an interest in the sport but not disposed to competing, National Motorsport Week will also be signposting a wide variety of other ways to get involved in motorsport. These opportunities range from participating in engineering education for school-age and undergraduate students through schemes like FIA Girls on Track UK, F1 in Schools and Formula Student to the opportunities to be on the front-line of club and international events as an all-important volunteer marshal.

Driving uptake of motorsport participation through a focused period of immersion, information and inspiration is the key to keeping the UK at the forefront of international competition as well as sustaining a powerhouse technology and engineering industry that supports more than 40,000 highly-skilled jobs and a net annual contribution of £9 billion to the national economy, even more prevalent in today’s current political climate, with sustainable alternatives and mobility solutions at the forefront of Number Ten’s agenda.

On Sunday, 21st June 2026, Pikes Peak, Colorado – in a remarkable rookie debut at the renowned Pikes Peak International Hill Climb - Jim Morris, owner of Lifeline Fire & Safety Systems, made history by setting a new Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) record. Starting 35th in the running order, Jim tackled the legendary 12.42-mile course, conquering its 156 demanding turns and ascending to a breathtaking 14,115 feet.

Chris Aylett, CEO - Motorsport Industry Association, commented: "On behalf of the many MIA members who helped Jim in creating this outstanding car, it is my pleasure to congratulate him on his hard-earned success.  I am proud that the logo of MIA featured on his car as did so many other logos from his supporters.  Jim has been a long time MIA committee member and MIA member and we are all proud of his courage and capability in securing a record at Pikes Peak.  Well done to everyone involved.

In the lead-up to the event, Jim devoted three weeks to familiarising himself with the mountain’s unique challenges, carefully driving the route in a rental car to learn each twist, turn and bump of the unique course. During practice week, his skill was tested on the three separate sections, but race day marked his first full-speed attempt at the entire mountain course.

Behind the wheel of a custom-built Volkswagen Golf GTI, Jim’s target was to surpass the previous FWD record of 10:48.094 - set in 2018 - and at just before 11:00am local time, he launched his record-breaking run. Crossing the finish line 10:33.104 later, the existing record had been beaten by nearly 15 seconds, marking an extraordinary achievement for both driver and team.

This performance was made all the more impressive as one of the two competing front wheel drive Time Attack Honda's was edged out by a mere 0.07 seconds, securing Jim’s place in Pikes Peak history and showcasing the capabilities of his Lifeline-backed machine.

Commenting on his record run Jim said: “We set out over four years ago to design and build the ultimate front wheel drive car to tackle Pikes Peak and break the existing front wheel drive record. Today we achieved that, bringing the record to the UK. I would like to thank everyone who has helped and supported this great team effort".
