The F1 in Schools STEM Challenge UK National Finals will showcase high flying talent, with 48 student teams competing for the F1 in Schools UK Champions title and a place at the World Finals later this year. The event being held from 11-12 March at Airbus' West Factory in Broughton, Flintshire, where wings for the company's entire family of commercial aircraft are manufactured, will celebrate the best young minds and engineering flair.

Winning student teams from regional finals around the country will race their bespoke designs of miniature Formula 1 cars on the Official F1 in Schools 20 metre track, present their business plans, display their engineering designs and showcase their work to a panel of industry and engineering experts. The two-day competition tests their F1 car designs to the limit on track, as well as the students supporting work with a busy timetable of judging sessions.

The UK Champions will win tickets to the Formula 1 British Grand Prix, including exclusive paddock access at the event from Formula 1, a Formula 1 team factory tour, two £5,000 scholarships for UCL Mechanical Engineering and, for the winning school, a F1 Branded Race Track and Race Control System with Car Deceleration System worth £5,000 and Denford Ltd.

The elite of the UK National Finals teams will be rewarded with a place at the F1 in Schools World Finals 2019. These students compete for the coveted F1 in Schools World Champions trophy, and highly valued City, University of London and University College London Engineering scholarships.

Andrew Denford, Founder and Chairman, F1 in Schools, said, "We've had an exceptionally strong series of regional finals with outstanding car designs, innovative ideas and highly professional presentations, so I'm very excited to see how they all perform, and I'm sure they will all have raised their game for the National Finals. Bringing Formula 1 into the Classroom with this programme really inspires the students and nurtures a passion for engineering as well as developing the student's life skills. They all learn so much, without realising it!"

Lucy Brooks, Team Manager from reigning F1 in Schools UK Champions, Unity from Emmanuel College, Gateshead, looked back on winning last year saying, "It has been the most amazing experience for us. After winning the UK Champions title we had the time of our lives at the British Grand Prix, meeting and having our photos taken with Formula 1 drivers. We then went to Singapore for the World Finals, which was the trip of a lifetime, the memorable experience, a really special time. Not only has it been the best fun, it's also really helped our career opportunities, opening so many doors and introductions, it is such an advantage to have F1 in Schools on our CVs."

The F1 in Schools National Finals 2019 takes place with the assistance of a host of sponsors and supporters. In addition to Airbus, these are the IET, Autodesk, Denford Ltd, City, University of London and UCL Engineering.

FIA open tender for standard gearbox suppliers in F1 from 2021

The FIA has invited applications to tender for the sole supply of standardised gearbox, to be used by all F1 teams from the 2021 session onwards. The move would mark a change from the current system, which sees teams either make their own gearboxes, buy them as part of a complete package from their engine supplier, or in the case of Toro Rosso, use the gearbox from sister team Red Bull.

The fixed supply arrangement would, however, only extend to the gearbox cassette itself, and would therefore require teams to make their own gearbox housings, ensuring that they can continue to design their own suspension systems with unique mounting points and aero surfaces.

Anyone interested in the tender is required to submit their proposals before March 15, a decision is expected between April 15-30.

Please see the original article here.

The FIA invitation to tender can be found here.

Ricardo has signed a new engine supply contract with McLaren Automotive. The latest agreement is the largest ever signed by the British supplier and confirms the company as supplier of engines to McLaren in support of its Track25 business plan.

Since 2011, Ricardo has manufactured the entire production requirements of McLaren Automotive as its purpose-built assembly facility at Shoreham in the UK. In the past year production levels approached 5,000 engines, while the total delivered since the partnership commenced now significantly exceeds 15,000.

"This supply agreement will take the highly successful relationship with McLaren into its second decade, and together with the entire Ricardo team I look forward to working with McLaren to deliver the engine needs into the Track25 business plan over the years ahead, including products featuring hybrid technologies," said Ricardo CEO Dave Shemmans.

Under the terms of this new agreement, Ricardo is nominated as the supplier for engine requirements as McLaren embarks on its Track25 business plan which includes 18 new models or derivatives, many featuring hybrid technology.

To support this diversification, Ricardo will invest in the production facility to accommodate additional product flexibility, new manufacturing capabilities, and further capacity.

"McLaren is pleased to be continuing our very strong relationship with Ricardo as our engine supplier," said Mike Flewitt, CEO at McLaren Automotive.

VNUK - MEPs vote excludes Motorsport from the new Motor Insurance Directive

VNUK - MEPs vote excludes Motorsport from the new Motor Insurance Directive - next stage, approval by the EU Council of Ministers.

'A welcome step, in the right direction, for EU motorsport, our industry and jobs' says the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA)

MIA HQ - 14/02/19: On February 13th in the EU Parliament, MEPs voted in favour of new laws to better protect victims of road accidents across the EU, and also to exclude any vehicles not used 'in traffic' and motorsport vehicles from the scope of the new EU Motor Insurance Directive (MID).

MEPs, through their IMCO Committee, must now negotiate these rules with the EU Council of Ministers to gain their approval before they come into force. The Council, which consists of an individual Minister from each EU Member State, could take a different position from that of MEPs and Parliament and decide to keep motorsport in this legislation.

"The MIA are delighted with this vote. We are grateful to those MEPs who understood the damage which the original interpretation of the VNUK ruling would have done to employment across EU motorsport" said Chris Aylett, CEO of the MIA "We need to support their work throughout the next stage of this process to make certain each national Minister on the Council of the EU supports the Parliament's proposals. Just one more lap to go but, as always, it's the most important one!'

Under this new legislation, road vehicle users across the EU must have a minimum level of insurance protection for personal injuries of, at least €6,070,000 per accident (or €1,220,000) per victim) and for damage to property (e.g. the other vehicle) the minimum will be €1,220,000 per claim.

"This compulsory and significant level of motor insurance protection would have applied to each and every motorsport accident at every level of the sport - on or off track, FIA/FIM regulated or not, in every EU country" said Chris Aylett, "Thankfully, MEPs listened to insurers who made it clear this was an uninsurable level of uncalculatable risk - and without insurance there would be no EU motorsport of any kind and our industry would close."

Should the Council of the EU need to vote then it will rely on a 'qualified majority' with each country having a set number of votes. Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Poland have the largest number but the vote allocation of each country is extremely valuable.

How driver biomechanics can boost performance

Biomechanical data collected from drivers while on the track could give racing teams a new way to optimise performance. Biomechanics is the study of movement and technique. Historically in motorsport, biomechanical data collection has been lab or simulator based.

However, researchers from the University of Portsmouth and a startup in the UK have developed a technique that collects 3D movement data from drivers by attaching sensors to their body. This data can be monitored and analysed as they are performing on the track, to investigate and optimise their biomechanics.

The data collected by Motorsport Biomechanics' system includes information about the body's motions, muscle activity, force and pressure assessment to help understand and improve driver and rider technique.

#WelcomeW10: Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport's tenth modern-day F1 car hits the track in Silverstone

Excited for the challenge of the upcoming 2019 Formula One season, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport ran its all-new F1 car for the first time today

The Mercedes-AMG F1 W10 EQ Power+ completed its first laps at the Silverstone International Circuit

Toto Wolff: "We're taking nothing for granted, every team is a potential threat."

The Mercedes team celebrates its tenth modern-day Formula One season with a new livery

With a little over four weeks to go until the start of the 2019 FIA Formula One season, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport today completed the first laps with its 2019 challenger. Named the Mercedes-AMG F1 W10 EQ Power+, the 2019 contender ran on the 2.98km Silverstone International Circuit this morning with Valtteri Bottas behind the wheel, to be followed by Lewis Hamilton this afternoon.

"The 2019 season will be a new challenge for all of us," said Toto Wolff, Team Principal & CEO. "The regulations have changed quite substantially. We have to start from scratch, we need to prove ourselves again - against our own expectations and against our competitors. We start the season with zero points, so we're taking nothing for granted and there's absolutely no feeling of entitlement to be at the front. In fact, with the regulation change for the new season, every team can have a show at the title and we're seeing all of them as a potential threat."

Today's running constitutes an official 100km filming day, which the team also uses as a final systems check before the first pre-season test in Barcelona.

"We're eager to hit the ground running in Barcelona, to benchmark ourselves against our own simulations and see if our predictions materialise on track," said Toto. "We will focus on ourselves building up performance and hopefully be ready when the first really competitive session starts on Saturday in Melbourne."

Ford reveals Supercars Mustang

The 2019 Ford Mustang Supercar has been officially launched ahead of the 2019 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship.

Kay Hart, president and CEO of Ford Australia and New Zealand, said, "This is a historic moment. To see the project come together has been incredibly exciting for everyone involved, and today marks the start of Mustang's 2019 season. Mustang belongs on the track and everyone at Ford and our fans have been waiting for this moment."

Ford and Ford Performance, alongside partners from Shell V-Power Racing and Tickford Racing, have designed, engineered and homologated Mustang for the 2019 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, which starts at the end of this month and ends in November.

The Mustang was officially approved by Supercars for racing in December 2018, however the final look of the iconic Fastback has been heavily camouflaged until today's reveal.

Supercars CEO Sean Seamer said, "For Supercars, the Mustang ushers in a new era. It's a product that you see readily on the road, it's been successful for Ford globally and here in Australia, and it gives the opportunity to reach younger and older generations with a fantastic looking race car."

Six Mustangs will enter the 2019 series, from three teams, with two Mustangs for Shell VPower Racing, three Tickford Racing Mustangs and an additional Mustang for 23Red Racing.

Ford Performance has also helped deliver the Mustang for NASCAR and NHRA, as well as the Mustang GT4 that was showcased alongside the Ford GT IMSA at the 2018 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

Brian Novak, Ford Performance motorsports supervisor, said "I'm really proud of the team in North America, and I'm really proud of the team down in Australia.

"We use the same processes to develop the Supercar that we do the NASCAR Mustang, that we do the Mustang GT4, that we do the NHRA Funny Car Mustang. That development has been proven out through other programs - the Ford GT at Le Mans for example - and we then transfer that back, that knowledge, back to the road car."

Jaguar Land Rover to introduce supercharged V8 to Velar

Jaguar Land Rover has extended the Velar engine line-up with the addition of its supercharged V8. Developed by Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations, the 5-liter unit will generate 550ps and 680Nm of torque. The most powerful Velar accelerates from 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds and is capable of 274 km/h.

Michael van der Sande, managing director, Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations, said, "Developing the Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition is the kind of task Special Vehicle Operations was made for. The challenge here was to increase performance without compromising the composure, capability and refinement inherent in Range Rover Velar."

On the outside, the SUV now features a new front bumper with larger air intakes to feed the V8 Supercharged engine and cool the uprated braking system. The exterior changes combine with a transmission tunnel undertray to ensure the fastest Velar in the the range cuts through the air more efficiently.

Gerry McGovern, chief design officer, Land Rover, said, "Our continued evolution is driven by a relentless focus on creating highly desirable vehicles our customers will love for life. The new Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition amplifies the highly desirable nature of the 2018 World Cup Design winner by introducing a compelling combination of heightened performance and luxury."

Calibrations for the AWD system, active rear locking differential, 8-speed transmission, steering and air suspension have all been honed and re bespoke to the SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition. Engineers at Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations spent 63,900 hours fine-tuning the calibration to optimize ride, handling and responsiveness.

The all-wheel drive system has been uprated too with a transfer box capable of withstanding the higher loads generated by the 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine.

The advanced Intelligent Driveline Dynamics system distributes engine torque to suit the conditions. The set-up can direct as much as 100% to the rear depending on conditions.

Formula One promoters criticise direction under Liberty

A majority of Formula One's Grand Prix promoters have issued a joint statement expressing concern about how the global motorsport series is being run by owners Liberty Media.

Representatives of 16 Grand Prix were in agreement that Formula One's migration from free-to-air TV 'is not in the long-tern interest of the sport'. The series has done an increasing number of deals with pay-TV broadcasters in recent years, while its new F1 TV over-the-top (OTT) streaming service costs between US$8 and US$12 per month.

Despite that, Formula One reported growth in audience figures across both TV and digital platforms in 2018, with the series global cumulative TV audience growing to 1.758 billion.

The three-point statement, which was issued by the Formula One Promoters' Association (Fopa) following a meeting in London, also criticised 'a lack of clarity on new initiatives in F1 and a lack of engagement with promoters on their implementation.'

Finally, there was a concern over Liberty's plans to add more races to the Formula One calendar, with a race in Vietnam already confirmed for 2020 and a well-documented push for a Grand Prix in Miami.

'New races should not be introduced to the detriment of existing events', the statement read, before adding that Fopa was 'encouraged by the alternative business models being offered to prospective venues'.

The move came ahead of the start of the 21-race Formula One season in March. Fopa said that its members are seeking 'a more collaborative approach' and 'the opportunity to offer their experiences and expertise in a spirit of partnership with Formula One and the FIA'.

Fopa is chaired by Stuart Pringle, the managing director of Britain's Silverstone circuit, which is one of five Grand Prix venues out of contract after the 2019 season.

The Daily Mail hinted that Liberty could now face a rebellion from some of its promoters, with Pringle telling the UK news paper: "Everyone is disgrunted. Liberty's ideas are disjointed.

"We have all been compliant and quite hitherto, but we have great concerns about the future health of the sport under the people who run it now."

Sauber renamed Alfa Romeo Racing for 2019

Sauber have rebranded as Alfa Romeo Racing ahead of the 2019 Formula One season.

The Italian luxury car manufacturer became the Swiss motorsport outfit's title sponsor ahead of the 2018 campaign, and the deal will now see the team drop the Sauber name that has been part of their identity since 1993 when they joined Formula One.

Alfa Romeo's ownership and management will remain unchanged and independent, with investment firm Longbow Finance still the sole owner of the team.

"After initiating the collaboration with our title sponsor Alfa Romeo in 2018, our team made fantastic progress on the technical, commercial and sporting side," and Alfa Romeo Racing team principal Frederic Vasseur. "This has given a boost of motivation to each team member, be that track-side or at the headquarters in Switzerland, as the hard work invested has become reflected in our results.

"We aim to continue developing every sector of our team while allowing our passion for racing, technology and design to drive us forward."

The move comes as Alfa Romeo prepare to embark on the 2019 season with an all-new driver line-up of Kimi Raikkonen and Antonia Giovinazzi. The new campaign gets underway with the Australian Grand Prix on 17th March.
