Government support

There is a new, free support service that HM Government is providing for traders involved in the movement of goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, to help them adapt to these new processes, free of charge.

If your company moves goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, then the new Trader Support Service (TSS) is here to help you prepare to continue the smooth movement of goods.

Why the TSS is needed

The UK will leave the EU’s Single Market and Customs Union when the transition period ends on 31 December 2020.

From 1 January 2021, the ‘Northern Ireland Protocol’ will take effect.

The Protocol is a practical solution to avoiding a hard border on the island of Ireland while ensuring the UK, including Northern Ireland, could leave the EU as a whole to ensure that:

From 1 January 2021, customs declarations as well as safety and security declarations will be needed for goods moving from Great Britain and Northern Ireland:

tariffs are not paid on trade within the UK
Northern Ireland can benefit from UK Free Trade Agreements
goods destined for Ireland (i.e. the EU) pay tariffs when they should.

What to do next

By registering for the Trader Support Service, you will be guided through all these changes – at no cost to you.

The Service provides a digital-first solution to make new declarations for goods originating in Great Britain and moving to Northern Ireland, using information provided by traders and carriers where traders wish to use TSS for this.

As part of the service, you can attend free IOE&IT training courses on key customs processes.

Simply register for the Trader Support Service to help ensure your firm is prepared to continue moving goods from 1 January 2021.
