Skills survey launched – and STEM report out this week

18 Mar 2014

This year’s CBI/Pearson education and skills survey is now live – click here to complete.

The survey provides authoritative information on how businesses view education and skills issues, and your participation will help to ensure that the CBI continues to have robust data to support their policy and lobbying work. In last year’s survey nearly 40 % of firms reported that they were struggling to recruit workers with the advanced STEM skills they need and almost half lacked confidence in getting high-skilled workers in future.

A CBI report to be published later this week sets out the need for the UK urgently to increase our STEM skill supply. A long-term strategic commitment to improving the UK’s supply of STEM skills will provide the confidence for businesses, universities and the education and training system to work together to invest in skills. The report will argue that achieving this requires action in three major areas:

  • Widening the pipeline of young people making it to skilled STEM work – especially women
  • Developing joint solutions between businesses for ongoing training
  • Aligning higher education funding with the STEM strategy
